Halloween used to be the one month the house looked nothing like itself. This year the best Halloween rooms look like the same house with the lights turned down and the colours pushed darker.
The palette is black, cream, bone and a little brass. The materials are dried, stone, linen and wax. Almost none of it is Halloween-specific, which is exactly why it looks expensive and why you’ll use it again.

Black and cream instead of orange and purple
The trend is a monochrome palette with one dark accent. White pumpkins, black tapers, cream pillar candles, bone-coloured stoneware. It reads as moody rather than themed.
Start with a set of brass taper holders and a pack of black taper candles. Group them in threes on the mantel or the table. That one move does most of the work.

Dried botanicals, not cobwebs
Dark dried stems are the new cobweb. Bunny tails, dried black wheat, preserved ferns and pampas in a heavy vase look like a florist did the room.
A bunch of dried pampas grass in a large ceramic vase works all season. Add a few dark dried stems for October and pull them out in November. Amber glass helps too: a row of amber bud vases with a single stem each along a windowsill catches candlelight beautifully.
Pumpkins, but the quiet kind
White, black and pale grey pumpkins in a cluster read as design. Carved faces are for the porch, and even there one good one beats five.
Champagne velvet pumpkins mixed with real white ones give you texture without the weekly trip to replace something soft. Our fall porch trends piece covers the outside of the door.

One dramatic focal point
Pick one surface and go all in: the mantel, the dining table or the entry console. Everywhere else stays as it is. A house with one dramatic moment looks intentional; a house with a Halloween touch in every room looks like a store.
For the table, a dark linen runner, flax linen napkins and your everyday cream stoneware is the whole set-up. Swap the black tapers for cream ones in November and you have the Thanksgiving table already done.
Candlelight does the atmosphere
Halloween rooms are lit low. Turn off the overheads, put warm 2700K bulbs in the lamps you keep on, and let candles carry the rest. Brass lanterns clustered on the floor by the door handle the trick-or-treat hour.

What comes down in November, and what stays
The black tapers, the dark stems and the carved pumpkin go. The brass, the dried grasses, the white pumpkins, the linen and the candlelight stay straight through to the holidays. See our holiday decor trends for where it goes next, and our Room Recipes for finished rooms you can shop.
