Harry Potter Bookshelf Decor That Still Looks Grown Up

Harry Potter bookshelf decor is one of the most-searched Halloween looks every October, and most of it goes wrong the same way: a pile of licensed plastic in front of the books. The version that actually photographs is the one that could stay up all year.

Think old library rather than gift shop. Leather, brass, amber glass, candlelight and a great deal of shadow.

Turn the books around, or do not

Spine-out backwards books are having a moment and they are divisive. The middle path works better: keep the spines showing, but pull anything with a bright modern jacket and put those elsewhere for the month. What is left reads as old automatically. Our book styling guide has the rest of the method.

Stack half of them flat

This is the single trick that separates a styled shelf from a storage shelf. Roughly half the books stand, the other half lie flat in short stacks with an object on top. The horizontals break the rhythm and give you somewhere to put a candlestick.

Work shelf by shelf rather than across the whole case, and pull everything off first. Styling around objects already in place is how shelves end up symmetrical and lifeless.

A set of brass candlesticks at three heights is the object to reach for first. For the shelves themselves, our bookcase guide covers the deep dark ones this look wants, and floating shelves work if a whole bookcase is not happening.

Stack some flat, stand the rest. The flat stacks are what make it look collected.

Amber glass instead of props

Apothecary bottles are the piece doing the wizarding work, and they are the one thing worth buying specifically. Amber bottles with a few dried stems in two of them, clustered at one end rather than spread evenly. If you want the licensed pieces too, the official collections are easy to find. Keep them to one or two and let the rest of the shelf stay quiet.

Light it from inside

An unlit bookcase disappears at night, which is when you want it most. Two rechargeable picture lights clipped to the top of two shelves, nothing on the others, and warm bulbs in the nearest lamp. The unlit shelves turning to shadow is the effect.

The same bookshelf at night with warm picture lights glowing on two shelves, candles lit below and the rest of the dark room falling away.
Light two shelves, not six. The dark gaps are doing the atmosphere.

Leave one shelf noticeably emptier than the rest. A bookcase styled evenly top to bottom reads as storage no matter how good the objects are, and the gap is what gives the eye somewhere to land.

One strange object

Every good shelf has something that makes you look twice. A brass telescope, an old key, a domed cloche over something odd, a small stack of leather-bound books tied with twine. One is plenty. Two is a theme, and a theme is what makes it read as a costume.

What stays in November

Almost all of it. The bottles, the brass, the lights and the flat stacks are just good shelf styling, so pull the two seasonal pieces on the first and the room keeps the atmosphere. The same principle runs through our gallery wall guide.
