The entryway is the first ten feet of the house and the last room anyone thinks to decorate. But it’s where the season registers first, for you and for anyone who comes through the door. Get it right and the rest of the house feels like fall before you’ve touched it.
Five things, one afternoon, and nothing orange.

The console in four moves
Something tall, something small, a tray, a lamp. A large ceramic vase of dried wheat and pampas for the height. Amber bud vases with a single stem each for the small. A brass tray for the keys so they stop living on the surface. And a lamp, because an entry lit from the ceiling is a corridor.

The lamp is not optional
A ceramic table lamp on the console with a 2700K bulb, on from dusk. It’s the single change that makes an entryway feel like a room. Put it on a plug-in timer so it’s lit when you come home.
Seasonal pieces sell through fast, so check availability before you buy.

A runner that’s long enough
Most hall runners stop a metre short. The best runner rugs guide has the sizing; the short version is that it should run almost to the end of the hall. A long jute runner is the autumn-right texture and survives wet shoes.
The basket of throws
A large woven basket of folded throws by the bench changes how the house gets used. People grab one on the way to the sofa, the patio, the car. Wool, a chunky knit, one in the accent colour.
One accent: rust or plum
The entry is small, so one colour is plenty. A plum or rust velvet bench cushion or a single velvet pillow on the bench. Everything else stays cream, wood and brass. A cluster of cream pumpkins by the door is as seasonal as it needs to get.

The mirror
If there isn’t one, a round wood-framed mirror above the console doubles the lamplight and gives the last-look-before-leaving its place. Our modern entryway ideas covers the layout; this is just the fall layer on top. For the whole entry laid out and shoppable, start with our Room Recipes.
