Halloween tables go wrong in one of two directions: novelty plates and plastic spiders, or so much black it reads as a funeral. The middle is a moody, elegant table that happens to be in October. Plum does most of the work.
This is a table for a dinner, not a party. Everything on it is something you’d use again at Christmas with the napkins swapped.

Start with the runner, not the plates
A plum velvet runner down a bare wood table is the whole mood in one piece. Velvet catches candlelight the way linen doesn’t. If your table is pale, a natural linen cloth underneath keeps it from floating.

The plates you already own
Cream stoneware, layered two deep. Against plum and black, cream reads as deliberate. Add a black linen napkin folded loosely and laid flat, and one dark dried stem across the plate.
Seasonal pieces sell through fast, so check availability before you buy.

Smoked glass
This is the one purchase that makes the table feel like October rather than any other month. Smoked grey goblets and tumblers turn ordinary water into something moody. They’re also the pieces you’ll reach for all winter.
Black tapers in brass, three heights
Black tapers in brass candlestick holders at varying heights down the centre. Brass warms the black; without it the table goes cold. Light them before anyone sits down.
Keep the florals low
A loose line of dark dried florals and a few matte black mini pumpkins along the runner, all below eye level. If people can’t see each other across the table, the arrangement has failed, no matter how good it looks. The same rule from our Thanksgiving table.

The lighting
Chandelier dimmed as far as it goes, candles doing the rest. If the dining room has warm 2700K bulbs already, you’re set. The softer, dark-linen version of this table is our elegant Halloween dinner table. For the dining room as a whole, laid out and shoppable, start with our Room Recipes.
