The wrong rug size is the most common thing that makes a living room feel “off” — and it’s almost always too small. Here’s how to get it right, with the exact designer rules.

The one rule that matters most

At minimum, the front legs of every seating piece should sit on the rug. A rug that floats in the middle with all furniture off it makes the whole room look smaller and disconnected. Bigger is almost always better.

Three correct layouts

  1. All legs on (most luxe): every piece of furniture sits fully on the rug, with 8–18″ of rug showing around the edges. Needs a large rug but looks the most high-end.
  2. Front legs on (most common): front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug; back legs are off. Grounds the space and works in most rooms.
  3. All legs off (smallest rooms only): the rug defines a central zone. Only works if the rug is still generously sized — at least as wide as the sofa plus a bit on each side.

Rug size by room

Rule of thumb: the rug should extend at least 6–8″ beyond each side of the sofa, and ideally sit 8–18″ from the walls (not wall to wall).

How to measure

  1. Arrange your furniture how you want it.
  2. Measure the full footprint of the seating group.
  3. Add ~8″ on each side for the “front legs on” look, more for “all legs on.”
  4. Round up to the nearest standard size (5×8, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12).
