2026 Sofa Trends, For Less: Lower Backs, Warmer Bouclé, Visible Legs

Sofas turn over slowly, which is exactly why the 2026 changes are worth knowing before you buy one. The high straight back, the tight boxy cushions and the grey weave are all on the way out, and they take a room down with them.

What is arriving is lower, softer and considerably more comfortable to actually sit in.

The back came down

The defining shape of 2026 is a low back with a deep seat. It makes a room look taller, it stops the sofa blocking the view across an open plan, and it is why every living room you save looks calmer than yours. A low-back sofa in cream is the whole trend in one purchase.

Keeping the sofa you have? Take the back cushions out, refill them softer and let them slouch. Half the look is cushion density, not frame.

Worth measuring before you order anything. A low back under a window feels generous, and the same sofa against a tall blank wall can look stranded. Hang art lower to meet it and the problem goes away.

Bouclé is still here, but warmer

Bouclé did not leave. It moved from bright white to oatmeal, mushroom and soft camel, which is the version that survives a real household. Our bouclé sofa guide has the ones worth the money, and best cream sofas covers the same shape in an easier fabric.

If a whole sofa is not the move this year, a bouclé barrel swivel chair puts the texture in the room for a fraction of it.

Curves over corners

The big sectional is losing to a sofa plus two chairs, usually swivels. It seats the same number, it works in a smaller room and it lets people face each other. We made the case in curves in interior design, and for genuinely tight rooms our small-space sectional guide still applies.

Velvet came back for the cushions

Not the whole sofa. Velvet in 2026 is a cushion and an ottoman, sitting against a matte woven sofa so the sheen has something to work against. A set of velvet cushion covers changes a sofa in an afternoon, and a chunky knit throw over one arm is the third texture the room needs. There is a fuller list in throw pillows for a neutral sofa.

Legs are visible again

Skirted bases are out, low wooden legs are in, and the floor showing underneath is what makes a heavy sofa look light. If yours sits flat on the floor, a sheepskin thrown over one corner breaks the mass until you replace it.

Where to spend

Spend on the frame and the cushion fill, because those are the parts you cannot fix later. Save on everything that sits on top of it, which is where the whole look actually comes from. Availability changes often, so check before you buy.
