A front porch is the one piece of Halloween decorating the whole street sees, and it is usually the most rushed. The elegant version is not more restrained than the fun one. It is just built on a tighter palette and better light.
Three decisions do almost all of it: what colour the pumpkins are, how many containers you use, and whether the porch reads after dark.

Pale pumpkins, massed
Cream, pale green, warm white and deep charcoal instead of the usual orange, grouped in odd numbers at three different sizes. Massing is what makes it look designed. Six pumpkins in one cluster beats twelve spread evenly along the step. The same argument, indoors, is in fall decor that isn’t orange.

Two big containers, never four small
Scale is where most porches lose. A pair of oversized terracotta planters flanking the door does more than a row of small pots, and they carry straight through to evergreens in December. Our outdoor planter guide covers the sizes that survive winter.
Fill them with dried grasses and branches rather than mums, which collapse in a week.

If real pumpkins are not practical where you are, the foam ones have improved enormously and nobody can tell from the pavement. Buy the matte finish rather than the glossy, which is the only thing that gives them away.
One thing on the door
A single dried wreath in muted tones, hung slightly lower than feels right so it centres on the visible part of the door. Skip the sign. Skip the second wreath. If the door is black or deep green already, you need less than you think.
Light it or skip it
Most people see a porch at dusk or later, which makes lighting the actual decoration. Warm string lights run along the eave rather than wrapped round a rail, warm bulbs in the porch fixture, and two black lanterns with real or flameless pillars low on the steps. Cold white light kills this look faster than anything else. Our outdoor sconce picks handle the permanent half.

Spooky, kept to one gesture
One unsettling thing is atmospheric. Five is a yard sale. A length of black gauze caught on the lantern, or a single dark silhouette in an upstairs window, is the whole budget. Everything else stays elegant so the one gesture actually reads.
Check it from the street before you call it done. A porch styled from the top step looks entirely different from thirty feet away, which is the only distance most people will ever see it from.
What carries into November
The planters, the lanterns, the string lights and the pale pumpkins all keep going to Thanksgiving. Pull the gauze on the first and nothing else needs touching, which is the same logic as our fall porch guide.
